Mary started playing flute in 4th grade after finding her German Opa’s 100 year old recorder in the china cabinet. At Bartow High School, she added other horns from Jazz Band- tenor sax and trombone. Mary pursued her Music Education degree at Polk Community College, where she also met Brent doing the same, [even though they really met for the first time at the Florida All Star Marching Band with 350 members doing a half time show for the Bucs - that’s back in the day…]
25 years, 3 beautiful children, 1 grandbaby, 1 dog, 1 cat, 2 college loans and a mortgage later, they still are performing awesome music together.
Mary received her B.S. in Music Education from Southeastern University and has worked for the Polk County School Board as a Music Teacher for 8 years. As a Band Director at Jewett School of the Arts, the students were exposed to Professional music and master classes from Chris Vadala, from the University of Maryland; Carol Thompson, from the University of Indiana; and the Capitol Sax Quartet from Washington D.C. The Jewett Band was awarded Superior and Excellent ratings under Mary’s direction, as well as students making All County and All State --- and students really liking music--- the best reward of all. She loves working with children of all ages, especially as a flute clinician to area schools and as a flute judge at the state level. She teaches private flute and sax students in the Winter Haven area.
Kemp Brinson Bass/Upright
When Kemp was a toddler, his dad used to put on old Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears records, sit Kemp on his lap, and play along on his drum set. When Kemp's kid brother decided to take up guitar, Kemp decided to give the bass a shot so as not to be left out. Since then, he's played trombone, did a stint with The Raleigh Ringers (a semi-professional hand-bell choir out of North Carolina), rung tower bells at Washington National Cathedral in Washington, DC, and then got back together with his first loves: bass guitar and the tunes his dad used to play for him. But he wasn't quite ready to settle down. A few years ago he started playing upright, an experience he describes as being akin to finally finding your soul mate. He met the rest of the gang doing musical theater shows at Theater Winter Haven where Kemp is chairman of the Board of Trustees. When Brent called him up to see if he were interested in being in the band between theater shows, it was a no-brainier.
By day, Kemp is an attorney practicing commercial, employment, and real estate litigation. At night and on weekends, he keeps us movin' and groovin' to the best bass lines from the greatest era of American music. He also has a blog where he talks about local news, the law, and whatever else is on his mind: http://www.polklawblog.com.
