Testimonials
This band was part of our entertainment at our annual Swamp Cabbage Festival. As entertainment chairman, I would strongly recommend this group to anyone looking for a group that has the ability to interact with the crowd. Their stage presence was outstanding and the gratitude of their members was remarkable. Several individuals, including the sound company was impressed with this group. Thank you for giving me an opportunity to express my comments. -- Ellen W, Labella, FL, 2/28/2010

Dear Mr. Booher,

Please accept my sincere appreciation for the outstanding music performed by Brass Heart Band at our event for about 200 professionals and business owners on Monday, February 1, 2010 at the Garden Ballroom in downtown Winter Haven. We had many comments on the great quality of your band. Not only was the music exceptional but the appearance and manner of the band members are laudable as well. I noted that you chose your music for our event to appeal specifically to our audience. Many of the pieces the band played were favorites of mine.  What professionals you all are! I would be confident selecting Brass Heart Band for any kind of event, knowing you will please.

HAINES CITY -- The Haines City Main Street & Merchants Association hosted Polk County's first street painting festival on Saturday, March 6 at the newly renovated Railroad Park and the historical train depot in historic downtown Haines City. The all-day event drew more than five dozen artists, masters and novices, from the Central Florida area.

“As the summer heat prevents painting on asphalt, the window of opportunity for the art festival was narrow," said Ronni Wood, the association's new executive director. "It was planned as a small event to peak the interest in a larger one next year.

"Most art festivals last up to three days," she added, "and can have squares up to ten-feet-by-ten-feet. Ours was a one-day event, so each artist got a seven-feet-by-seven-feet square to paint,”

Each square boasted, in large block letters, a sponsor from a local business, city, or organization. The festival was a family-friendly affair with a kid's street painting zone, the Brass Heart Band from Winter Haven playing contemporary jazz and rock under the red-topped gazebo, face painting, and food vendors from restaurants in the historic district – Café Cabaret, Hungry Howie's, La Fiesta Mexicana Restaurant, Old Town Café, and Three Boys Café.

On the applications that artists signed to participate in the event, it said there would be no gore, nudity, political statements, or violence.

About 1,200 flyers were sent out to local schools to advertise this event and encourage families to attend.

    Puttin’ on the Ritz

Restoring a historic theatre in downtown Winter Haven

    By JON SALM

In less than a month, the historic Ritz Theatre in Winter Haven will be completely restored to its former glory. Originally known as the Williamson Theatre, the Ritz was built in 1925. Many Winter Haven residents grew up going to shows and films at the Ritz.  “I’ve been coming here since I was ten years old,” said Jim Pruitt. “I even had my own seat.” Pruitt, a lifelong Winter Haven resident and owner of Florida Home Choice Realty in downtown Winter Haven, sees the Ritz’s restoration as a significant element in the resurgence of downtown Winter Haven. “In the 60’s, downtown was the hub. Everything was downtown. Then it all spread out – to the suburbs, away from the center. Downtown in the 80’s and 90’s was neglected. Now, downtown Winter Haven is really taking off.” In addition to the Ritz, many other buildings in downtown Winter Haven are being renovated or rebuilt, and a new parking garage is set to open later this year.

Pruitt serves on the board of the Ritz Theatre 100, a community-led initiative which aims to restore the theater “to its original glory and present it to the community of Winter Haven and Polk County,” according to the group’s mission statement.  Stella Heath, Executive Director of the Ritz 100, has plenty of theater restoration experience. She led the effort to restore Frostproof’s Raymond Theater, which reopened in 2005. “We are bringing back a part of history that has been dormant since 1996,” Heath said of the Ritz. “We are going straight from restoration to operation.”

The process of restoring the Ritz began in the mid-nineties and has progressed slowly over the past decade and a half. Community activists have contributed both financially and by serving on the board of the Rtiz 100. While many have served on the group’s board, the current members will be able to finish the work of their predecessors. “We are here because of all the boards that went before us; but we are the lucky group that will see it get done,” said board member Amy Sumerlin. Sumerlin has served on the board of the Ritz 100 for four years.

When the Ritz is reopened in early October, the theater will serve as a multipurpose venue that can hold meetings, fundraising events, performances, movies, private parties, weddings, and more. “We have something different in this auditorium than other venues–we don’t have permanent seats. It gives us the versatility to do a number of things,” said Pruitt.

While the Ritz will soon be open for business, the restoration process will not be entirely finished. “We will still need help with the carpet and the curtains,” said Heath. The Ritz 100 will host their second annual Twilight at the Ritz Halloween gala to raise interest and funds for the theater. This will be the first event held in the restored Ritz Theatre.

The event, which was held at the Orange Dome last year, was the group’s most financially successful event to date. Board members hope to repeat last year’s success. “We are going to make use of as much of the theater as possible,” said Sumerlin. “We will have areas in the auditorium, the balcony, and a VIP area off the main lobby. The Brass Heart Band, who is just phenomenal, will be performing. It is the ‘not to be missed’ event of the Halloween season!”

The Ritz 100 board is very excited to announce a run of four shows by entertainer, musician, comedian and Winter Haven native Jim Stafford in December.  Stafford, best known for his top 40 hits “Swamp Witch” and “Spiders and Snakes,” will play shows from December 15th to the 18th. Stafford’s performance on Saturday the 17th is billed as a homecoming fundraiser for the Ritz. Proceeds from the event, which includes a reception, will go towards the continued restoration of the theater.

While Stella Heath and the Rtiz 100’s current board will see the theater through it grand reopening, Heath said it could never have been done without the help from previous board members and a number of helpful supporters. “We couldn’t have done it without the City of Winter Haven, the Winter Haven Community Redevelopment Agency, the Polk County Board of County Commissioners, and all of our individual donors. They have all helped bring this facility back to operation.”
